Fukuoka Rainy-Day Route: The House of the Great Thief to Tenjin Underground

Rain in Fukuoka during July rarely behaves like a neat all-day forecast. Heat, humidity and a sudden heavy shower can take turns within the same afternoon. A comfortable city day therefore needs more than an emergency shopping mall. It needs one indoor experience worth travelling for, short covered transfers, places to sit, and an evening that still works when the rain never fully clears. The 2026 special exhibition The House of the Great Thief gives the morning a real purpose. Visitors enter the home of a famous thief who has gone out for one final crime, moving through corridors, a reception room and hidden spaces while trying to understand the absent owner. From the museum above Nakasu-Kawabata Station, Tenjin is only one subway stop away. Lunch, an underground shopping route, coffee and an indoor dinner can follow without rebuilding the entire day around the weather.

Exit 6 opens almost directly into the thief’s eight-room mystery
Welcome! Summer Art Museum Vol. 3: The House of the Great Thief runs from July 9 to August 30, 2026 in the seventh-floor Exhibition Gallery. The premise makes the visitor part of the show: the notorious resident is away, and the audience enters a house divided into eight rooms. Portraits of thieves, disguise tools, artworks by invited creators and strange collected objects—stars and pairs of socks among them—turn the gallery into an unfolding story rather than a conventional row of labels. Allow roughly 90–120 minutes for a first visit. Families may take longer because children naturally return to clues and scenic details. Adults who prefer a faster pace do not need to read every wall text to understand the atmosphere. Food and drink belong outside the gallery, with the seventh-floor Art Cafe or the surrounding Riverain and Kawabata area providing a natural pause afterward. The permanent-collection programme Asian Art Walk: East Asia is also running through August 30, introducing work connected with Japan, South Korea, North Korea, China, Taiwan and Mongolia. It can add another 45–60 minutes, but it should remain optional on a day that continues to Tenjin. Leaving the museum with some attention and energy is more useful than completing every room in the building.

The special exhibition closes earlier than the museum’s Friday and Saturday galleries
The House of the Great Thief is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with final entry at 5:00 p.m., and has no closed day during the exhibition period. This exhibition-specific schedule is different from the museum’s general information, which normally lists Wednesday closure and longer gallery hours on Friday and Saturday. A late-afternoon visit therefore cannot assume that the ticketed show remains open until 8 p.m. Admission is ¥1,800 for adults, ¥1,100 for junior-high and high-school students, and ¥600 for elementary-school students. The advance or group rates shown in parentheses are ¥1,700, ¥1,000 and ¥500. Family age rules, discount documents and the final ticket channel should still be checked at purchase. Night Museum sessions were scheduled for July 19, August 1 and August 8 from 6:00–7:00 p.m., with a capacity of 30 groups per session. All three are now full and registration has closed, so they are not a practical evening add-on. The Friday 6:30 p.m. Live@Museum performance in the Art Cafe is a separate event with its own dates and possible cancellations; it does not extend admission to the special exhibition.
Heavy rain uses one subway stop; light rain can leave space for Kawabata
The museum address is Riverain Center Building, seventh and eighth floors, 3-1 Shimokawabata-machi, Hakata-ku. It sits directly above Nakasu-Kawabata Station Exit 6. The subway journey is about ten minutes from Fukuoka Airport and five minutes from Hakata Station; Tenjin is one station away. In strong rain, enter the subway from the hotel or major station and use the Riverain lift from the basement level, keeping the uncovered distance very short. During drizzle or a dry interval, a short walk through the Kawabata shopping arcade can add older Hakata streets to the day. It is an optional piece of city texture, not a required test of endurance. Wet socks, a stroller or an older companion are all good reasons to return to Nakasu-Kawabata and take the one-stop ride to Tenjin. Riverain has paid underground parking, but the second half of the route connects to Tenjin Underground and may include alcohol with dinner. Subway travel is usually simpler than finding a second parking arrangement and returning purchases to the car. A short urban rail journey is part of the rain plan, not a failure to walk the city.
A seated lunch protects the afternoon from becoming an underground endurance test
The seventh-floor Art Cafe opens from 9:30 a.m.; the museum’s information page lists the Museum Cafe food-and-drink service from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A coffee inside the museum can extend the exhibition mood. When it is already close to 12:30, a proper meal in Riverain, Kawabata or Tenjin is more useful than remaining hungry because the next district has “more choice.” Free museum lockers are available for baggage, but a large suitcase should not be assumed to fit. Travellers coming directly from the airport or Shinkansen are better served by leaving the main case at Hakata Station or the hotel and bringing only rain protection, medication, a camera and the actual child-care items needed for the morning. Gallery visitors should not arrive with a full set of shopping bags and takeaway food. Lunch also separates genuine shopping interest from hunger-driven browsing. On a humid rainy day, the tiring combination is not simply distance. It is wet clothing, strong air-conditioning, paper bags and a search for somewhere to sit. A real meal provides the transition between art and retail.
Tenjin Underground works better as one shopping purpose than a complete traversal
Tenjin Underground’s standard hours are 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. for shops and 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. for restaurants, with individual exceptions. Current 2026 notices include temporary closures, renovations and shops with shorter hours. A specific brand deserves a same-day official shop check rather than confidence in an old list. The underground street links Tenjin subway station, Tenjin-Minami Station, Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and several department stores and shopping complexes. In persistent rain, give the afternoon one purpose: lifestyle gifts, clothing, cosmetics, or coffee plus one department store. One or two stops in a category are enough. Completing every connected building adds bags and escalators without necessarily improving the purchase. Food souvenirs and refrigerated items belong in the final hour so they spend less time in warm trains or hotel lobbies. Clothing and shoes work better earlier, while the energy to try and compare remains. Tax-free procedures, campaign discounts and stock are confirmed at the actual counter; an online promotion image is not a promise that the product or condition remains unchanged.

Strollers and wheelchairs fit the route without an outdoor detour
Subway users can enter Riverain from Nakasu-Kawabata Exit 6 and use a basement lift that reaches the museum. Accessible restrooms are available on both the seventh and eighth floors. The eighth floor has a baby room, all restrooms have changing tables, and free wheelchairs or strollers can be requested at the seventh-floor reception desk. Tenjin Underground has lifts around the stone squares in the east and west eighth avenues, connecting street level, the shopping arcade and parking. Its official map also identifies nursing and accessible facilities. Department-store links do not all share the same lift position, so a family or slower walker benefits from choosing one precise entrance before moving with the crowd. Use the museum restroom before departure, then plan the next facility around lunch or the chosen department store. Those few minutes matter more on a rainy day, when an umbrella, stroller, child and several paper bags all compete for the same two hands.
Yatai depends on the weather; dinner does not have to
The yatai around Tenjin, Watanabe-dori and Nakasu give Fukuoka evenings their distinctive social atmosphere, but individual opening depends on rain, wind, the operator and available seats. When the shower has eased and shopping bags are back at the hotel, a stall can be an excellent bonus. When rain continues, Tenjin Underground restaurants generally remain open until 9 p.m., and the connected department-store area offers many indoor alternatives. A Tenjin hotel allows a quick bag drop before checking the streets. A Hakata-based traveller can take the subway back and eat around the station or hotel rather than carrying purchases across the city again after dinner. Yatai are easiest for one or two people with little luggage and flexible timing. Families, larger groups or anyone needing a predictable meal usually fit an indoor restaurant better. Coffee and dessert can also provide a clear ending. A genuinely restful table is more valuable than buying three extra bags during the final twenty minutes before the shops close.
From 9:30 to 7:30, the day still has empty space
Arrive at Nakasu-Kawabata around 9:20 a.m. and use the Exit 6 lift. Enter The House of the Great Thief at 9:30 and allow about two hours. At 11:40, choose the East Asia collection only when attention remains; otherwise move directly to lunch in the museum, Riverain or Kawabata area. Around 1:30 p.m., take the subway one stop to Tenjin and begin with the underground street plus one main retail complex. After 3:00, keep only one shopping theme and take a seated coffee break. Finish food souvenirs, tax-free processing and final purchases by about 5:30. A Tenjin guest can return to the hotel; a Hakata guest takes the subway back. Between 6:30 and 7:30, choose an underground restaurant, Hakata Station dinner or a brief yatai visit after the weather stabilises. The heavy-rain version removes the Kawabata arcade and yatai. The light-rain version restores one short street section. The family version replaces the second gallery with the Kid’s Corner or lunch and keeps shopping to one building. Each outdoor movement ends at another dry place where the group can sit down, which is what allows the day to feel like Fukuoka rather than an emergency shelter plan.
