Fukuoka to Aso: Day Trip or Overnight?

Aso is possible as a day trip from Fukuoka, but it is not a short one. Collecting a rental car, leaving the city, driving into the mountains and returning after dark can turn the day into more time behind the wheel than at the sights.

When a day trip works

A same-day return works best when you are comfortable driving mountain roads, can leave early and are happy to focus on two or three main stops. A straightforward route is Daikanbo, Kusasenri and the Nakadake crater if access is open, with Aso Shrine added only when time allows.

• Leave enough time to collect and return the rental car.

• Avoid adding Kurokawa Onsen to the same day unless you are staying nearby.

• Choose one proper lunch stop rather than filling the route with short photo stops.

Check crater access before leaving

Access to the Nakadake crater can be restricted because of volcanic gas, weather or safety conditions. Check the official notice on the morning of travel. If the crater is closed, Kusasenri, Daikanbo and Aso Shrine can still make a worthwhile route.

Why staying overnight is easier

One night in Aso lets you respond to changing weather, spend longer at viewpoints and avoid a late drive back to Fukuoka. It also makes it realistic to include an onsen or continue towards Takachiho or Kurokawa the next day.

I would stay overnight when travelling with young children, when nobody in the group enjoys long drives or when the crater and Kusasenri are the main reasons for the trip.

A simple two-day route

1. Day 1: drive from Fukuoka, stop at Daikanbo and Aso Shrine, then check in around Aso.

2. Day 2: visit Kusasenri and the crater if open, then return or continue through Kyushu.

Who should skip the same-day return

• Travellers uncomfortable with mountain roads or driving after dark.

• Groups with small children or several fixed meal and activity reservations.

• Visitors trying to combine Aso, Kurokawa and Takachiho in one day.
