Nagaoka Fireworks Guide: Tickets, Hotels and Getting Home

Nagaoka’s fireworks are staged beside the Shinano River on 2 and 3 August each year. The display is famous, but the practical challenge is arranging an official seat, accommodation and a realistic journey after hundreds of thousands of spectators leave together.
Tickets and the two nights
The main riverbank viewing areas require official tickets. Sales may use lotteries, additional releases or an official resale system. Check the current festival website and do not assume that seats will be available after arriving in Nagaoka.
Both nights include major signature displays, although individual programmes differ. For a first visit, choose according to ticket availability, hotel price, weather and your next morning’s plan rather than worrying that one date is the weaker night.
Choosing a riverbank and seat
The two banks differ in viewing angle, station access, bridge crossings and the crowd-control route after the show. Choose a seat together with your hotel and departure plan, not only by how central it looks on the venue map.
The riverbank is often described as a walk from Nagaoka Station, but festival controls and dense crowds make it much slower than an ordinary day. Confirm the correct entrance and save the route before leaving the station area.
Stay in Nagaoka or Niigata?
Nagaoka
A Nagaoka hotel removes the late train journey and is the easiest option after the show. Rooms sell extremely early, prices rise and some properties use special festival packages. Check the hotel’s distance from your riverbank section rather than assuming every city-centre room is close.
Niigata city
Niigata has more rooms and may be cheaper, but you must walk back to Nagaoka Station with the crowd and board a busy train. Save the final services and do not arrange a tight connection after the scheduled finish.
Tsubame-Sanjo, Urasa and organised tours can also work, but only when the post-event connection is confirmed.
Leaving after the show
The published finish is not the time you will reach the station. First you must pack your seat, leave through a controlled exit, cross or avoid bridges according to your section and join the station or parking queue.

Do not book a late dinner or onward train with a short connection.
Follow the official exit for your seat instead of trying to cross the crowd towards another bridge.
When to arrive
Arrive in Nagaoka during the afternoon. This gives you time to store luggage, eat, buy water, confirm the entrance and find your seat before dark. A reserved seat removes the need to hold a place all day, but arriving shortly before the show is still risky.
What to bring
Seat cushion, water and simple food.
Power bank, tissues, rubbish bags and cash.
A raincoat rather than an umbrella in the seating area.
A light layer for the riverbank after dark.
Weather
Light rain does not always cancel the display, but wind, thunderstorms, river conditions or other safety concerns can affect it. Check official same-day announcements rather than relying only on a general weather app.
