Before the train reached Beppu Station, white steam was already rising from hillsides, rooftops and drainage channels. If I had not known it was hot-spring steam, the city would have looked as if it were quietly burning.

Day 1: The seven hells and Kannawa after dark

The seven hells are split into two clusters. Five are in Kannawa, while Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku are farther north toward Kamegawa. The efficient route is to complete the five Kannawa hells first, then use a bus or car for the final two.

2. Oniishibozu Jigoku

3. Kamado Jigoku

Kamado Jigoku combines several pool colours, steam demonstrations and food stops in one compact site. First-time visitors often find it the most varied of the seven, so it deserves more time than some of the smaller hells.

4. Oniyama Jigoku

5. Shiraike Jigoku

Shiraike Jigoku has a pale blue-white pool and a quieter atmosphere. It does not require long, but its proximity to Kamado and Oniyama makes it a logical final stop in the Kannawa cluster.

6. Chinoike Jigoku

Official combination ticket and hours

The Beppu Jigoku Association currently lists opening hours of 8:00–17:00 for all seven hells, year-round. Since February 2025, the common admission ticket has been 2,400 yen for high-school age and above and 1,200 yen for elementary and junior-high students. It is valid on the purchase date and the following day, with one entry per hell. Check the official site before payment because prices and rules can change.

Jigoku-mushi steam cooking

After the Kannawa hells, you can use geothermal steam to cook eggs, vegetables, seafood or simple meal sets. Popular periods may involve a queue, so take a number first and use the waiting time for a nearby walk.

Day 2: Downtown Beppu, a sand bath or a slower onsen morning

Do not build another long-distance sightseeing loop on day two. Choose Beppu Station, Takegawara Onsen, Beppu Park or a day-use hot spring according to where you sleep. Some sand-bath facilities can close for renovation, weather or operating changes, so check the current status.

Beppu Station or Kannawa: where should you stay?

  • Beppu Station: best for JR access, downtown dinner and an onward journey the next morning.

  • Kannawa: best when the steam-filled streets, jigoku-mushi food and onsen atmosphere are central to the trip.

A practical two-day schedule

  • Day 1 morning: Arrive in Beppu, store luggage and travel to Umi Jigoku.

  • Late morning to lunch: Complete the five Kannawa hells and try jigoku-mushi cooking.

  • Afternoon: Visit Chinoike and Tatsumaki Jigoku.

  • Evening: Walk Kannawa, visit Yukemuri Observatory or use your ryokan onsen.

  • Day 2: Choose downtown Beppu, Takegawara Onsen, a day-use onsen or a slower checkout.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming all seven hells are adjacent and forgetting the transfer to Kamegawa.

  • Starting too late and rushing against the 17:00 closing time.

  • Sleeping near Beppu Station while planning every evening activity in Kannawa.

  • Seeing the hells but never entering a real Beppu onsen.

Final take

The best two-day Beppu plan is to make the seven hells and Kannawa one complete first-day route, then leave day two for downtown Beppu, an onsen and recovery time. Think of the hells as two geographic clusters inside a living hot-spring city, not seven identical attractions.

Once you stop racing for the next bus, you start noticing steam rising from drains, rooftops and hillsides. That is the part of Beppu no checklist can reproduce.
