For a three-day route from Fukuoka through Hita, Yufuin and Beppu, the most balanced first-trip plan is not to sleep in every place. Use Fukuoka as the gateway, stop in Hita during the day, then spend one night in Yufuin and one night in Beppu. This protects the quiet evening and early morning that make Yufuin worth its premium, while keeping Beppu’s stronger rail, bus, dining and onward-travel options for the final night.
The main exception is a late arrival into Fukuoka. When a flight or train lands too late to reach Oita Prefecture comfortably before dinner, use the first night in Hakata or Tenjin and the second in Beppu. Hita is a rewarding intermediate stop, but on an ordinary three-day trip it rarely deserves another hotel change at the expense of Yufuin or Beppu.
The 30-second hotel answer
First visit: one night in Yufuin, then one night in Beppu. Only one night: Beppu by default; Yufuin only when the ryokan is the main event. Late arrival or early departure: Fukuoka for the late landing, Beppu Station for the early exit. No car: treat Hita as a light-bag stop and confirm a Yufuin pickup. Large luggage: Beppu Station is easiest; forwarding luggage can protect the Hita day. Best hotel experience: arrive early and make Yufuin the first night.
What each stop is actually for
Fukuoka is the network hub for flights, shinkansen connections and late dining, but it is not the best use of a scarce hotel night when the trip is about onsen and ryokan time. Hita is the ideal intermediate stop for Mameda-machi, local food and Attack on Titan sites without another checkout. Yufuin belongs on night one because dinner times, transfers and early-closing shops make it the least forgiving of a late arrival. Beppu belongs on night two because it offers more transport backups, later food and easier onward travel.
Choose by traveller and next journey
First visit without a car: leave Fukuoka, stop in Hita with a small bag and reach Yufuin in time for check-in and dinner. Move to Beppu after the Yufuin morning rather than dragging luggage through every attraction.
Couples and anniversaries: concentrate the higher hotel budget on Yufuin. A private bath, dinner and room time can replace several outside activities. Use Beppu for the more functional second night.
Families and large luggage: two Beppu nights can be the lower-friction answer, with Yufuin as a day trip and Hita optional. When keeping the Yufuin night, confirm pickup, child meals, bedding and room space before paying.
Late arrival or early departure: a late Fukuoka landing justifies the first night in Hakata. An early train, flight or onward connection usually makes Beppu Station the safer final base.

ENOWA YUFUIN
ENOWA is for travellers who want the first night to feel like a destination rather than a transport stop. It suits couples and special occasions where privacy, nature, dinner and bathing are the itinerary.

The property is at 544 Maruo, Kawakami, Yufuincho, around 1.8 km from Yufuin Station. A taxi or confirmed transfer is more realistic than walking with luggage, especially after a Hita stop.
Hotel experience
The farm, restaurant, landscape and onsen work as one sequence. Arrive early and keep the evening and morning at the property rather than returning to the shopping streets.

Beppu Hattou Onyado Nono Beppu
This is the easiest second-night choice for a rail-based trip, an early departure or large luggage. It sits by JR Beppu Station while still delivering a natural onsen and Japanese-style interior.

The address is 2-6 Ekimae Honmachi, roughly a one-minute walk from JR Beppu Station. The short route is valuable in rain and before an early train; Kitahama bus stops still require extra walking.
Hotel experience
A top-floor natural onsen, private baths, luggage storage and self-service laundry are the practical strengths. Breakfast inclusion remains rate-specific.

Beppu SUGINOI HOTEL

A late-arrival sequence becomes Fukuoka first and Beppu second. Families and travellers with heavy luggage can use two Beppu nights and visit Yufuin by day.
