Hokuriku and Chubu in 5 Days: Tateyama Kurobe, Toyama, Kamikochi and Matsumoto

A Hokuriku and Chubu route becomes difficult when every map pin is treated as equally important. Tateyama Kurobe is a chain of timed transport. Kamikochi needs a weather window and several hours on foot. Shirakawa-go is reached by reserved buses, while Kanazawa can easily fill two days on its own.
The cleanest five-day route has one direction and one purpose: enter from Toyama or Kanazawa, cross or visit the alpine area, continue through Matsumoto or Takayama and finish without returning over the same mountains.
Choose one of two route shapes
Alpine route: Toyama → Tateyama Kurobe → Matsumoto → Kamikochi.
Heritage route: Kanazawa → Shirakawa-go → Takayama → Kamikochi or Matsumoto.
Trying to complete both shapes in five days means too many hotel changes and early departures. Seven days is much more comfortable when Tateyama, Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi all matter equally.
Five-day alpine route
Day 1: Toyama
Arrive in Toyama, leave large luggage at the hotel and use the afternoon for the city or a short coastal trip. Keep the evening simple because the alpine route requires an early start.
Day 2: Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
Travel from Toyama through Tateyama Station, Bijodaira and Murodo, then continue towards Daikanbo, Kurobedaira and Kurobe Dam before descending to the Nagano side. The exact time depends on queues, weather and how long you spend walking at Murodo.
Send large luggage separately to Matsumoto or the next major hotel. Carry only a day pack through the buses, cable cars and ropeway.

Day 3: Matsumoto
Use Matsumoto as the recovery day after the alpine crossing. Visit Matsumoto Castle and Nawate Street, then prepare for Kamikochi rather than adding another distant excursion.
Day 4: Kamikochi
Take the early train and bus towards Kamikochi. For a first visit, get off at Taisho Pond, walk through Tashiro Pond to Kappa Bridge and continue towards Myojin only if time and weather allow.
Return to Matsumoto or stay near Kamikochi when the early-morning atmosphere is important.

Day 5: Depart from Matsumoto or continue to Tokyo
Use the final morning for a slower castle visit, local food or the onward train. Avoid placing a critical flight immediately after a mountain day with several possible disruptions.
Five-day heritage route
Day 1: Kanazawa
Visit Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle and one historic district. Do not compress the city into a few hours before an evening bus; the gardens and museums deserve a full day.
Day 2: Shirakawa-go and Takayama
Reserve the bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go and another connection onward to Takayama. Store or forward large luggage because the village paths and bus storage are easier with a small bag.
Allow several hours in Shirakawa-go rather than treating it as a photo stop. Continue to Takayama for the evening.
Day 3: Takayama
Visit the morning market, old town and Takayama Jinya. The city is walkable, so this day works well after several bus transfers.
Day 4: Kamikochi or Matsumoto
From Takayama, travel through Hirayu towards Kamikochi. In poor weather, continue to Matsumoto instead and use the city as the main destination.
Day 5: Matsumoto and departure
Finish with Matsumoto Castle before travelling onward. This route works best when the final destination is Tokyo or Nagoya rather than a return to Kanazawa.
When to travel
Late spring and summer: best for Kamikochi and the high alpine route, with snow remaining at higher elevations.
September and October: strong for mountain colour, but the peak changes by elevation and cold weather arrives early.
Winter: Tateyama and Kamikochi are not ordinary sightseeing routes; focus on Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go and Takayama instead.
Rail pass or individual tickets?
No single pass covers every train, bus, cable car and ropeway in this route. Compare the actual long-distance rail journeys first, then add the separately priced mountain and highway-bus sections.
A pass is not useful if it encourages unnecessary returns to the same city. The strongest saving often comes from an open-jaw route and one less hotel transfer.
Luggage strategy
Forward large luggage from Toyama to Matsumoto, or from Kanazawa to Takayama or Matsumoto, and carry one or two nights of essentials. Station lockers can fill during busy periods, and mountain transport is uncomfortable with a large suitcase.

Treating Kamikochi as a short stop between cities.
Scheduling the only mountain day immediately before a flight.
