Kamikochi Day Trip: Taisho Pond, Kappa Bridge and Myojin Pond

Kamikochi is not a single viewpoint around Kappa Bridge. Its appeal comes from the gradual walk beside the Azusa River, from the still water of Taisho Pond through wetlands and forest to the classic Hotaka mountain view.
The easiest first-time route
Get off the bus at Taisho Pond.
Walk through Tashiro Pond and Tashiro Bridge towards Kappa Bridge.
Stop for lunch and supplies around Kappa Bridge.
Continue to Myojin Pond only if time, weather and energy allow.
This direction avoids walking back towards Taisho Pond after reaching the busy centre. The scenery also opens naturally from quiet water and wetlands into wider river and mountain views.
Taisho Pond
Taisho Pond is most rewarding early in the day, when the water is often calmer and mountain reflections are clearer. Starting here also turns the route into a mostly one-way walk towards the bus terminal.
Tashiro Pond and Tashiro Bridge
The trail between Taisho Pond and Kappa Bridge passes wetlands, woodland and the river. It is generally gentle, but wet boards, mud and fallen leaves can be slippery after rain.
Kappa Bridge
Kappa Bridge is the main centre for restaurants, toilets, hotels and the bus terminal. It is useful as the middle or final part of the route, not the only reason to travel to Kamikochi.
The bridge is busiest around midday. After taking the classic photograph, walk a short distance along either riverbank for quieter views of the Hotaka range.
Myojin Pond
Myojin Pond suits visitors with a full day and enough energy for several additional hours of walking. The route beyond Kappa Bridge is quieter, but the round trip must include photography, rest and the final bus queue—not only the map’s walking estimate.
Removing Myojin from a short or rainy-day itinerary is sensible, not a failed trip. Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge already forms a complete half-day route.
Getting there from Tokyo or Matsumoto
From Tokyo, the most common route is through Matsumoto, followed by the local railway and bus connection. From Nagoya or Takayama, highway-bus routes may be more convenient.
Private cars cannot enter central Kamikochi. Drivers must park at a designated transfer area such as Sawando or Hirayu and continue by bus or taxi.
Half day, full day or overnight?
Half day: Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge, then leave from the bus terminal.
Full day: add the Myojin area after lunch and return along the opposite riverbank.
Overnight: best for early-morning Taisho Pond, evening light and avoiding the main day-trip crowd.
Matsumoto is the most balanced external base, with more restaurants and transport options. Staying inside Kamikochi costs more but buys access to the quietest hours of the day.
Weather and footwear
Mountain conditions can differ sharply from Matsumoto. Bring a light warm layer and rain protection even in summer. In autumn, mornings and evenings become cold quickly.
Rain can make the forest atmospheric, but paths and boardwalks become slippery. Wear comfortable walking shoes with grip and leave large luggage in Matsumoto, your hotel or a locker.
