Shodoshima Kankakei Autumn Guide: Ropeway, Ports and Driving

Kankakei combines autumn colour, steep volcanic rock and views across the Seto Inland Sea. The main planning decision is how you will reach the gorge after the ferry, because Shodoshima’s ports are spread around the island and public transport is limited.
When to see the autumn colour
The gorge usually begins changing in early November, with stronger colour often appearing from the middle to the end of the month. Different elevations change at different times, so lower areas may remain attractive after the summit has passed its peak.
Check recent photographs, the ropeway’s foliage updates and same-day operating notices before travelling. Wind and maintenance can affect service.

Three ways to visit Kankakei
Ropeway from Kōuntei Station
Starting at the lower station gives you the full ascent through the gorge. The ride is short, but the view changes quickly from rock walls and trees to the sea and islands beyond the summit.
This is the simplest option for visitors arriving by seasonal bus, provided the return service and final ropeway fit the same timetable.
Drive to the summit
Drivers can reach the upper area first, use the viewpoints and take the ropeway down and back if desired. This makes it easier to combine Kankakei with Olive Park, the soy-sauce district or another part of Shodoshima.
Mountain roads and summit parking become busy on peak weekends. Arrive early and check any temporary traffic controls.
Ropeway one way and hike
Several trails connect the upper and lower gorge. Choose this only in stable weather with proper footwear and enough daylight. Fallen leaves can hide loose stones and make slopes slippery.
Choosing your ferry port
From Takamatsu
Takamatsu has frequent ferry connections and is the easiest approach for travellers based in Shikoku. Tonosho is a major arrival port, but it is not beside Kankakei; continue by bus, taxi or rental car.
From Okayama
Travel from Okayama Station to Shin-Okayama Port, then take the ferry to Tonosho. Include the land transfer to the port when comparing the full journey, not only the ferry crossing.
From Himeji
Ferries from Himeji arrive at Fukuda Port on the northeast side of the island. This route can suit travellers coming from western Kansai, especially with a car, but ferry frequency and onward connections require careful checking.

Can you visit without a car?
Yes, but the day must be built around ferry and bus times. Seasonal buses may serve Kankakei during the autumn period, but services are limited and may not connect neatly with every port.
Choose the ferry and arrival port first.
Confirm the bus or shuttle to the lower or upper ropeway station.
Check the final ropeway, return bus and ferry.
Add another island attraction only when the transfers still leave a safe margin.
Is driving worth it?
For most visitors seeing several parts of Shodoshima, yes. The island’s attractions are widely separated, and a car removes much of the waiting between ferry ports, Kankakei and coastal sights.
A manageable route is Kankakei in the morning, lunch around Kusakabe or Uchinomi, then Olive Park in the afternoon. Add Angel Road only when the tide and departure port fit the route.
What to wear
The summit is colder and windier than the coast. Bring a windproof layer, rain protection, water and shoes with reliable grip. Proper hiking footwear is recommended for any trail beyond the viewpoints.
