Where to Stay for Naoshima and Shodoshima: Okayama, Kurashiki or Uno?

For two full island days—one for Naoshima and one for Shodoshima—Uno is the most efficient base when the ferry timetable works. Okayama is the safer all-round base for a late shinkansen arrival, large luggage, dinner choices and onward travel. Stay in Kurashiki only when the Bikan Historical Quarter after day-trippers leave is part of the trip.
First visit and one night before an early ferry: choose Uno. Late arrival, early onward departure or heavy luggage: choose Okayama. A hotel-focused waterfront stay: UNO HOTEL. A heritage-town evening: Kurashiki.
How the three bases actually differ
Uno removes the morning rail transfer. Okayama gives shinkansen access, far more backup options and easier luggage handling. Kurashiki adds a worthwhile evening destination but also another rail leg on island days. Naoshima ferries are frequent; direct Shodoshima services are less frequent, so the actual sailing must decide the base.
Choose by traveller and onward route
Stay in Uno when both island timetables are confirmed and you want early starts. Use Okayama for a late arrival, large luggage or the widest margin for error. Couples can choose UNO HOTEL for a stronger sense of place. Kurashiki is worth the extra transfer only when the old town itself deserves the night.
Three hotels that solve different problems
UNO HOTEL
Best for two island days with the least morning friction. The hotel is about one minute from Uno Station and roughly three minutes from the ferry terminal.

The Superior Twin is approximately 25.67–28.11 m² with two single beds and an ocean-view balcony. Premium Deluxe rooms are about 38 m². Many standard rooms are shower-only; a bathtub is limited to named suite categories.
Location and transport
The mostly level route from JR Uno Station to the hotel and pier is easy with luggage. Guests can leave the main cases, carry a daypack and walk to an early sailing.
Hotel experience
The on-site restaurant solves Uno’s limited late-night dining. Selected plans bundle breakfast and access to the neighbouring hot-spring facility; extras are not automatically included.

Best for late arrivals, large luggage and onward shinkansen travel. The covered connection to JR Okayama Station creates the widest margin for error.

The renovated Premium Superior Twin is about 32 m² with two beds and a separated bath, washbasin and toilet. Room generations differ sharply, so an entry rate may buy an older or smaller category.
Location and transport
The covered station connection is easy in rain and with heavy bags. Every island day still requires the JR Uno Line, so build in margin before the ferry.
Hotel experience
Restaurants, station shopping and a noon checkout support late arrivals and onward travel. Breakfast and pool access are not automatically included and can carry age, fee or time conditions.

The OneFive Garden Kurashiki
Best when Kurashiki’s canal after the day-trippers leave is one of the experiences you are buying. It is not the most efficient ferry base.

The Standard Twin is about 18 m², the Superior Twin about 26 m² and the Deluxe Twin 38 m². The Superior is the sensible middle choice for two adults; confirm the exact bath or shower layout on the room page.
Location and transport
The Bikan Historical Quarter is close, while JR Kurashiki Station is roughly ten to sixteen minutes away on outdoor streets. Heavy luggage and rain make a taxi more comfortable. Island days still require another rail transfer to Uno.
Hotel experience
Self-service laundry is practical mid-trip. Breakfast and afternoon-tea inclusions have varied by plan. The reason to stay is the evening and early-morning canal walk.

One-night and two-night allocations
One night before an island day: stay in Uno. A late arrival in Okayama: stay in Okayama rather than chasing the last useful train. Two nights for two island days: use Uno for both and lock in the Shodoshima sailing first. Add Kurashiki only when the historic evening is worth another hotel move.
