Naoshima E-Bike Guide: Miyanoura Rental, Hills and One-Day Route

Naoshima looks small on a map, and I first assumed that a normal bicycle would be enough for one day. Once Miyanoura, Honmura, the coast and the museum area are placed together, hills, headwinds and ferry times begin consuming the schedule. An e-bike is not a shortcut; it keeps more energy available for art, walking and the return to port.

I use Ougiya near Miyanoura Port as a practical rental option and reserve before buying the final ferry plan. On popular dates, arriving without a booking can leave only a frame or bike type that does not suit my height or route.

Normal bicycle or e-bike?

A normal bicycle can work if I only move between Miyanoura and Honmura, have good fitness and visit in cool weather. For connecting several areas, riding in summer or travelling with people of different ability, I choose an e-bike. It will not remove every hill, but it prevents one climb from draining the rest of the day.

Reserve the ferry window before the bicycle

I first identify my preferred and backup ferries from Takamatsu or Uno, then reserve a bicycle for the corresponding hours. Booking a bike before checking the boats can compress the useful island time or leave me paying for a rental period I cannot reach.

The rental request may require height, bike type and collection time. I also confirm the final return time. If a ferry changes or I enter through another port, I contact the shop rather than letting a reserved bicycle sit unused.

Test three things before leaving Miyanoura

I test saddle height, brakes and assistance modes before riding away. It is frustrating to discover outside the port that my feet cannot reach the ground comfortably or that I have used maximum assistance on every flat section. Battery power is more valuable on afternoon climbs and the return journey.

I also confirm the lock, prohibited parking areas and the emergency contact process. Naoshima is not a place to lean bicycles against any available wall. Museums and residential art areas require designated parking and respect for local streets.

Do not divide one day equally between every district

After collecting the bike in Miyanoura, I move to Honmura for neighbourhood works and any reserved entry, then continue towards the southern museum area according to the booked times. In the afternoon, I return to Miyanoura with enough space for the bicycle handover, ferry ticket and boarding queue. Reservations create the skeleton; I do not force equal time into every area.

In rain, strong wind or severe heat, I reduce cross-island riding and use the bike only locally, switching to the bus when necessary. Paying for an e-bike does not create an obligation to circle the whole island. Safety and catching the ferry matter more.

The mistakes that most often damage the day

The common problems are arriving on a popular date without a reservation, judging the route only by the island’s size, tying large luggage to the bicycle, failing to reserve museum times, aiming for the final ferry, parking carelessly in residential areas and riding at a racing pace in summer heat.

Conclusion

The value of an e-bike on Naoshima is that distance and gradients stop dominating the day. Fix the ferry and artwork reservations first, then book the bike, test its battery and protect the return-ferry buffer. That lets attention remain on the art and island life instead of constant fear of missing the boat.
