5- or 7-Day Kyushu Autumn Leaves Itinerary: Fukuoka, Yufuin, Beppu and Mountain Routes

A five-day Kyushu autumn itinerary should use one city-and-mountain corridor; seven days can add one neighbouring cluster. Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin and Beppu work by rail and bus, while Yabakei, Kuju or an Aso road loop justify a short rental. Takachiho and a Mifuneyama night need an overnight base. Trying to combine Yabakei, Kuju, Takachiho, Unzen and Mifuneyama in one week turns the trip into long transfers.

Last checked August 4, 2026. Exact 2026 foliage dates and several seasonal bus or evening-event schedules were not final. Current standard adult JR Kyushu Rail Pass prices are ¥15,000/¥17,000 for Northern Kyushu 3/5 days and ¥22,000/¥24,000/¥26,000 for All Kyushu 3/5/7 days. JR’s online booking currently shows lower limited prices, which should be rechecked before purchase. The Kokura–Hakata Sanyo Shinkansen, subways, buses and non-JR railways are excluded.

Choose one corridor from the travel date

Late October usually favours higher Kuju, Aso or Unzen sectors, with cities and lowlands as backups. Early November can suit Fukuoka–Hita–Yabakei–Beppu. Mid-November is the period to consider Takachiho and Kumamoto if current reports align; Takachiho should be an overnight. Late November shifts the decision toward Takeo, Mifuneyama, Ureshino, Nagasaki and lower Fukuoka-area foliage. These are planning patterns, not a dated forecast.

Do not cross Kyushu because one photograph on social media looks red. Changing from northern Oita to Takachiho or Takeo can consume half a day or more. Keep a high/low backup inside the same corridor: Kuju to Yufuin or Beppu, Yabakei to Hita or Nakatsu, Takachiho boat suspension to the walking viewpoint and shrine, and an unconfirmed Mifuneyama event to Takeo, Ureshino or Nagasaki.

Five-day route A: Fukuoka, Hita, Yabakei and Beppu

Day 1 is an arrival and setup night in Fukuoka. Stay near Hakata when JR and luggage are the priority, and do not connect a late international flight to the last mountain bus. Day 2 moves to Hita. Store the main bag, walk Mameda and the river area, then sleep in Hita. This night converts Yabakei from a punishing Fukuoka return into a daylight mountain day.

Day 3 uses a rental from Hita or Nakatsu, or a dated local-bus plan, with Hitome Hakkei as the anchor. Add Ao-no-Domon or one onsen/short-walk sector. If parking, traffic or rain grows, remove the second zone and continue to Beppu. Public transport reaches selected areas, not a complete valley circuit. Sleeping in Beppu avoids driving or waiting for a late Fukuoka return.

Day 4 is Beppu onsen and city sightseeing, or a rail day to Yufuin. Lake Kinrin at dawn and a half-board ryokan need a Yufuin night; a shopping-only visit can remain a day trip. Day 5 returns to Fukuoka for Dazaifu, Akizuki or a city garden, but never schedules the only mountain day against a flight. Oita Airport is useful only when the timetable and baggage remove backtracking.

Five-day route B: Fukuoka, Takachiho and Kumamoto

Sleep in Fukuoka on Day 1. On Day 2 use a reserved highway bus or rental car to Takachiho, with ryokan dinner, parking and any evening kagura confirmed before departure. Takachiho is a poor ultra-long day trip from Fukuoka because one motorway or mountain delay destroys the gorge time. Day 3 begins at the gorge; add the boat only with a separate reservation and same-day operation confirmation. The walking viewpoint is the dependable core.

Protect the transfer to Kumamoto rather than booking the final possible connection. Day 4 is Kumamoto city or Aso according to weather, volcanic restrictions and driving confidence. A delayed gorge morning should remove Aso, not compress it. Day 5 departs from Kumamoto or returns to Fukuoka by rail. This route works only when Takachiho is the main reason for the trip; do not add Yabakei, Kuju or Nagasaki.

Seven days: add one neighbouring cluster only

The Oita mountain version adds one Kuju day and one extra Yufuin or Beppu night to Route A. Rent only for the mountain sector and choose Chojabaru, Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi, Makinoto or one walking area. Fog, first snow or strong wind should move the day to Beppu, Yufuin or Hita rather than force the plateau.

The Aso–Takachiho version links Kumamoto, Aso and Takachiho in one corridor. A practical week uses one Fukuoka night, one or two Kumamoto nights, one Takachiho night and one Aso or Kurokawa night, leaving transfer and weather margin. Seven days do not justify adding Yufuin and Nagasaki as well.

The late-November version follows Fukuoka–Takeo–Mifuneyama–Nagasaki. After an evening event, sleep in Takeo or Ureshino instead of returning late to Fukuoka. Dated 2026 event, ticket and shuttle details must come from the official announcement; if unavailable or sold out, retain Takeo Onsen, Ureshino and Nagasaki.

Rail pass, IC card, reservations and partial driving

Add the eligible JR sectors—Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin, Beppu, Kumamoto, Takeo and Nagasaki—before comparing a pass. Yufuin no Mori is all-reserved; a pass is not a seat. Northern Kyushu pass seat reservations have a limit, so reserve high-demand trains early. Takachiho buses, Yabakei local buses, Fukuoka subway, rental cars, parking and event transport remain separate.

Use an IC card for compatible city travel and rail/bus tickets for the trunk corridor, then rent for one or two mountain days. Include insurance, tolls, fuel, parking, one-way fees, early darkness and wet leaves. Do not collect a car on the international-arrival day or return it against a flight. Forward the large suitcase between Fukuoka, Beppu or Kumamoto and carry one overnight bag into Yufuin, Takachiho or the mountains; confirm that the next property accepts delivery.

Hotel bases: fewer moves usually beat one extra sight

Miyako Hotel Hakata and JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Hakata Central illustrate gateway bases. Kizantei Hotel Hita shortens the Yabakei day. Yufuin Bettei Itsuki represents a slower onsen night; AMANEK Beppu YULA-RE and Kamenoi Hotel Beppu are Beppu bases; Solest Takachiho Hotel illustrates a town overnight. Check the exact property, room, breakfast, dinner deadline, parking, shuttle, cancellation and luggage acceptance. These are planning examples, not live rate or inventory claims.

Past-peak, rain, suspension and sold-out Plan B

When mountain colour has passed, move lower to Yufuin, Beppu, Hita, Takeo or Fukuoka-area foliage. Heavy rain, fog or first snow should remove Kuju, Aso ridges, Yabakei roads and boat plans before it removes onsen, cities or museums. A suspended Takachiho boat still leaves the viewpoint, shrine and town. A sold-out Yufuin no Mori can be replaced by another JR service. If a mountain hotel sells out, change to the nearest transport base before replacing the whole corridor.
