The real problem on a Hakata–Hita–Yufuin–Beppu trip is deciding where a 28-inch suitcase should be while you sightsee, transfer and reach a ryokan before dinner. The lowest-stress answer is often to send the main case to the final hotel and carry an overnight bag through Hita and Yufuin. Do this only after the receiving hotel and service counter confirm eligibility. Luggage forwarding Hakata to Yufuin: the 30-second answer
Hakata → Hita → Yufuin: use Hakata’s same-day service only when the property participates, accepts the bag and you can finish acceptance by 10:00. Otherwise, store it in Hita and use Yufuin Chikki or the ryokan after arrival. Hakata → Hita → Beppu: forward the main case to Beppu and carry one night of essentials. If same-day eligibility fails, use ordinary Yamato or Sagawa with a buffer rather than assuming next-day arrival. Hakata → Yufuin → Beppu: without a Hita stop, taking the case to Yufuin is more manageable. Chikki can deliver to participating Yufuin accommodation, and a Beppu hotel may store it before check-in after direct confirmation.
Late flight into Fukuoka: sleep in Hakata and handle forwarding the next morning. One night in Yufuin: protect the ryokan dinner and pickup deadline before optimising the luggage fee. Two nights in Beppu: send the main case there and visit Hita and Yufuin light. Families or two large cases: forward the main cases and carry overnight bags; do not assume locker, bus or shuttle capacity.
Four luggage strategies compared
A. Forward the main suitcase to Yufuin
Hakata’s same-day partner-hotel service currently costs ¥2,500 per item up to size 160. It removes the case from the Hita stop, but the property may not participate, a small ryokan may refuse advance luggage and busy-period suspensions occur. Use it only with an early start and written hotel confirmation. Ordinary courier delivery follows separate size, distance and lead-time rules.
B. Forward the main suitcase to Beppu
For Yufuin on night one and Beppu on night two, this is usually the most resilient option. Beppu has stronger transport, staffed storage and more station-area hotels. You gain a light Hita stop and an easier Yufuin arrival. The overnight bag must still cover 24–48 hours in case weather, an address problem or a collection delay affects delivery.
C. Use staffed storage or station lockers
This can cost less and avoids hotel-acceptance risk, but it requires returning to the station. Hita has staffed storage beside the station; Yufuin Chikki has storage, lockers and participating-hotel delivery. Locker quantity and availability can change, and there is no guarantee that a suitable locker will be free when you arrive. Switch immediately to staffed storage rather than waiting for another traveller to return.
D. Carry everything throughout the route
There is no forwarding fee, but walking to Mameda-machi, Yufuin’s shopping streets, station stairs, buses and ryokan pickups becomes slower. Rain or two cases can turn the saving into a missed connection or dinner. Carry everything only with one case you can lift independently and accommodation close to the station.
The recommended three-day luggage plan
On day one, complete Hakata acceptance early and send the main suitcase to the Beppu hotel used on night two. Keep passports, medicine, chargers, one change of clothes, ryokan-dinner clothing and child essentials in the overnight bag. Visit Hita without the suitcase, continue to Yufuin and check in before dinner. On day two, use the Yufuin morning, travel to Beppu and collect the main case. On day three, leave Beppu with the full luggage. This plan requires three confirmations: the Hakata counter is operating and you meet its cutoff; the Beppu hotel is eligible for the chosen service or has agreed to ordinary courier delivery; and the booking name and check-in date match the label. If any answer is uncertain, use Hita staffed storage, Yufuin Chikki or carry the case directly to Beppu.

What you can do at Hakata Station
JR Kyushu Trading’s temporary-storage counter is normally on the first-floor concourse in front of the conventional-line Central Ticket Gate, although the official notice says the position can move to the elevator area near the Hakata Exit. Standard storage hours are 10:30–18:30. On weekends and public holidays, an alternative counter may operate on the second floor of AMU Plaza Hakata from 10:30–19:00. The regular price is ¥1,000 per item per day, rising to ¥1,500 in designated busy periods. Storage is limited to seven days; missing closing time can mean collecting on the next business day with an additional charge.
Same-day delivery to participating Yufuin and Beppu hotels currently accepts bags from 8:30–10:00, up to size 160, for ¥2,500 per item, with arrival targeted by about 18:00. It may pause around Golden Week, Obon and the year-end/New Year period. Delivery to participating Fukuoka city hotels accepts from 10:30–14:00 for ¥2,000. DELIBAG to Fukuoka Airport International Terminal uses the same acceptance window and price, targets arrival around 16:00 and requires collection by 18:00. These are partner-point services, not universal coverage.
The public notice does not clearly list every payment method, so reconfirm before relying on an overseas card. Staff may help with an English waybill, but verify the check-in date, booking name, hotel phone and recipient. Keep cash, identity documents, valuables, animals, weapons, dangerous goods, perishables and foul-smelling items out of temporary storage.

Handling luggage during a Hita stop
JR Hita Station officially lists coin lockers, but no reliable official count, size inventory or live vacancy is published. Locker quantity and availability can change; there is no guarantee that a suitable locker will be free when you arrive. The stronger backup is the Hita Tourist Information Center beside the station, where staffed storage currently costs ¥700 per item from 9:00–17:00 and closes on 1–2 January. Deal with luggage first, then walk roughly fifteen minutes to Mameda-machi.
Ooyama and other sights outside central Hita add another bus, taxi or transfer problem. If lockers are full during a short stop, do not wait; use staffed storage or remove the outlying sight. When Hita is only an intermediate break, stopping with two 28-inch cases is rarely worth the friction.

Handling luggage in Yufuin
Yufuin Station has coin lockers, but official sources do not guarantee quantity or availability. The station has used a temporary building since 26 March 2026. During the works, the waiting room, art hall, public telephone and footbath are unavailable, and construction is expected to continue into winter of fiscal year 2026. Travellers with large luggage should not rely on old station photographs or walking routes.
The most useful staffed option is Yufuin Chikki on the first floor of the tourist information centre beside the station. Luggage services run 9:00–17:00. Delivery from Chikki to participating Yufuin accommodation accepts 9:00–15:00; delivery from a participating property back to Chikki accepts 9:00–11:30. Since 1 October 2025, delivery is ¥1,200 for height 80 cm or above, ¥1,000 for 60 to under 80 cm and ¥800 below 60 cm, with surcharges from 20 kg. Chikki serves accommodation affiliated with the Yufuin Onsen Tourism Association; a hotel in Yufuin is not automatically eligible.
Current staffed-storage prices are ¥800 for items 60 cm or above and ¥600 below 60 cm, with lower small-bag rates. Current locker prices are ¥600 for a large locker and ¥500 for a small locker, but vacancy is never guaranteed. If the ryokan is on a hillside or offers pickup, confirm the pickup time and meeting point rather than rolling a case through Yunotsubo Kaido. With half board, the dinner arrival deadline should override extra shopping time.
Small ryokan, rentals and unstaffed properties may refuse courier luggage. Yamato requires the property’s agreement, recommends dispatch at least two days before check-in—three depending on distance—and does not allow a delivery-time request or cash on delivery. Never ship while the hotel’s answer is pending.

Handling luggage in Beppu
JR Beppu Station has coin lockers. Its staffed ticket office currently runs 7:00–19:00 and the station is accessible roughly 4:50–23:20, but no official live locker inventory is guaranteed. WANDER COMPASS BEPPU is the staffed fallback beside the East Exit: about one minute from the station, open 8:45–18:00, with storage from ¥700. Storage plus delivery to a Beppu city hotel or ryokan is listed from ¥1,200. The counter offers multilingual help and cards or cashless payment, subject to destination, cutoff and item restrictions.
Near Beppu Station or Kitahama, hotel storage is usually simplest, but pre-check-in and post-checkout storage remain property policies. Kannawa adds a bus and walk. SUGINOI and other off-station hotels require a shuttle or taxi; verify the timetable, boarding point and luggage capacity. A hotel shuttle does not guarantee a dedicated station desk or space for two large cases on every departure.
When Beppu is followed by Fukuoka, Kumamoto or an airport, work backwards from the transport departure and counter closing time. Arriving at 18:00 for an 18:00 closing is not safe. Station-area accommodation lowers risk, but an OTA page never confirms advance-luggage acceptance; contact the hotel after booking.

Questions to ask the hotel before forwarding
Ask whether the hotel accepts prepaid luggage, how early it may arrive, which name and date belong on the label, and whether courier, size or item-count restrictions apply. Confirm whether cash-on-delivery is refused, how late luggage is stored after checkout, and whether a pickup vehicle can carry a 28-inch case or two large cases. Written confirmation is safest.

Prohibited and high-risk items
Under Yamato and station-counter rules, do not forward cash, cheques or securities, credit cards, passports or tickets, irreplaceable originals, animals, human remains, weapons, poisons, dangerous goods, flammable, volatile or explosive substances, items valued above ¥300,000, unsanitary items, or ordinary TA-Q-BIN pieces above size 200 or 30 kg. Liquids, alcohol, cosmetics, food and batteries can face additional packaging or air-transport restrictions. Ask staff to inspect an uncertain item rather than guessing.
Keep passports, medication, glasses, cash, phones, cameras, chargers, power banks, transport tickets, child essentials and at least one change of clothes in the overnight bag. Anything you cannot live without for 24–48 hours should not be in the forwarded suitcase.
What to do if luggage is delayed or missing
Photograph the waybill, tracking number, receipt, the outside of the suitcase and the hotel’s acceptance message. For a delay, contact the courier, dispatch counter and receiving hotel. Provide the tracking number, dispatch date, traveller name, phone number, check-in date and a description. A hotel not finding the case immediately does not prove permanent loss; an address mismatch, booking-name variation, cutoff, weather delay or partner-hotel problem may be responsible.
Buy only necessary replacements, retain receipts and check whether travel insurance covers delayed baggage, essentials or permanent loss. Coverage depends on the policy and carrier terms; this article does not promise reimbursement. If the bag is travelling to a hotel you no longer plan to use, notify both hotel and courier immediately. Changing accommodation in an app does not redirect the shipment.
Late flights and severe weather
After a late arrival in Fukuoka, a first night in Hakata is risk control rather than wasted time. The following morning gives a realistic chance to meet Hakata’s 10:00 same-day cutoff. Missing it means ordinary courier delivery, station storage or carrying the case onward. Sagawa’s Fukuoka Airport International Terminal counter offers storage and same-day delivery to participating Fukuoka city hotels, but it is not a direct Yufuin or Beppu substitute.
Typhoons, heavy rain, snow, road restrictions, Golden Week, Obon and the year-end/New Year period can delay or suspend delivery. Do not tie a ryokan dinner, the last shuttle, a morning flight and guaranteed luggage arrival into one fragile chain. In poor weather, send the case to a two-night Beppu base, keep it in Hakata or add at least one full day of buffer.
Decision flow
First ask whether you need to open the large suitcase within 24 hours. If not, ask whether the final hotel has confirmed prepaid receipt in writing. When yes and Hakata’s cutoff is achievable, forward to the final hotel. When no, check whether Yufuin Chikki serves the property or use staffed storage in Hita or Beppu. With a one-night stay, severe weather, an unstaffed rental or an early flight, keep the main case in Hakata or carry it directly to Beppu.
For two 28-inch cases, children or older travellers, include stair lifting, bus capacity and a locker-full backup in the decision. Do not compare only the yen charge. A cheap plan that causes a missed ryokan dinner, a return trip to the station or an inaccessible bus is not actually cheap.
FAQ
Is same-day Hakata-to-Yufuin delivery guaranteed?
No. It depends on the operating date, acceptance window, size limit and current partner-hotel list. Busy-period suspensions are possible, and the receiving hotel must agree to accept the bag.
Does the ¥2,500 Hakata-to-Beppu service cover every hotel?
No. It is a JR Kyushu Trading partner-hotel service. Ordinary Yamato or Sagawa delivery has different pricing, acceptance points and lead times.
