Choose Sumida if this is your first Tokyo fireworks night and the city backdrop matters most. Choose Edogawa for a clearer riverside show and more open viewing space. Choose Itabashi for giant shells and a straightforward Mita Line plan, but only after updating your route for the relocated 2026 free area. Choose Chofu if your dates fall in September or you prefer a western-Tokyo base. Edogawa and Itabashi both run on August 1, 2026, so they are alternatives rather than a double-header.
The 30-second decision
Sumida River | July 25: the strongest Asakusa and Tokyo Skytree setting, but the least relaxed free-viewing experience.
Edogawa | August 1: roughly 14,000 shells and a broad riverbank setting for travellers willing to arrive early.
Itabashi | August 1: giant shells and a Mita Line strategy using Takashimadaira and the relocated upstream free area.
Chofu | September 12: a later option that works particularly well from Shinjuku and the Keio Line.
What each festival is actually good at
Sumida: choose the Tokyo setting, not picnic comfort
Sumida works because Asakusa, bridges, neighbourhood streets and Tokyo Skytree become part of the scene. Buildings interrupt sightlines, streets are controlled and the closest station on a map may be the least useful station after the finale.

Edogawa: put the focus back on the fireworks
Edogawa uses a broad riverbed and a programme of roughly 14,000 shells. It is easier than Sumida to focus on the display itself and to plan for a family group or seated viewing, but free areas still require an early arrival and a deliberate exit plan.

Itabashi: update the route before chasing giant shells
The critical 2026 change is the relocation of the general free area to the upstream baseball fields. The official approach is from Takashimadaira on the Toei Mita Line; following older Nishidai, Hasune or Ukimafunado advice can lead to paid zones or long detours.

Chofu: a September alternative on the Tama River
The 41st Chofu Fireworks is scheduled for September 12, 2026, with fireworks from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. and roughly 10,000 shells. It works especially well for travellers based around Shinjuku or the Keio Line.
Edogawa or Itabashi on August 1?
Choose Edogawa for a clearer programme, broad sky and a choice between the Tokyo and Ichikawa banks. Choose Itabashi for giant shells and a direct Mita Line strategy. Families, older travellers and anyone unable to stand for long should value a reserved seat, fewer transfers and an early exit more than shell count.
Where to stay for Tokyo fireworks
The best base removes the hardest journey after the show. Shinjuku is the most flexible for Edogawa and Chofu; Asakusa turns Sumida into a walk-back night; Sugamo keeps Itabashi on one subway line. These hotels solve different transport problems rather than forming a generic ranking.
Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku | Best overall transport base
Choose this when the fireworks are one night inside a wider Tokyo trip and you want one hotel that still works for shopping, restaurants, the airport bus and the next day's sightseeing. Shinjuku's rail network also leaves room to change the event plan without changing hotels.

The 15.7 m² Economy Double has a 140 cm Simmons bed; the 18.7 m² Standard Double has a 160 cm bed. The 23.1 m² Standard Twin gives two travellers two 120 cm beds and more usable floor space, while the 28.2 m² Deluxe Twin can add a sofa bed for a third guest. These are ordinary city rooms, not fireworks-view products.
Location and transport
JR Shinjuku South Exit and Busta Shinjuku are about three minutes away, while Toei Oedo Line Exit A1 is about one minute away. The Toei Shinjuku corridor works toward Edogawa and the Keio Line toward Chofu, although neither event offers a walk-back return to the hotel.
Hotel experience
Restaurants, a bar, coin laundry, a microwave and luggage services are practical before and after a crowded night. The breakfast buffet has more than 50 Japanese and Western items and costs about ¥3,300 when it is not included.
Price reference
A July 24, 2026 public example for two adults on August 17 showed about US$145 including displayed taxes and fees. That entry rate did not automatically include the 23.1 m² Twin or breakfast.
Booking notes
Selected OTA rates offered free cancellation. The standard direct rule is normally 20% the day before, 80% on arrival day and 100% for no-show, while advance-purchase plans can be stricter. Breakfast and the exact room category are plan-specific.

Choose this for a first Tokyo fireworks night, an anniversary or anyone who wants Asakusa before and after the crowds instead of a long train home. Kaminarimon, the guest terrace and an early-morning Sensoji walk turn the hotel into part of the event.

Location and transport
The hotel is beside Kaminarimon, about two minutes from Tokyo Metro Asakusa Exit 2 and three minutes from Toei Asakusa Exit A4. Festival road controls and one-way crowd flow still apply, but the night does not end with a cross-city train.
Hotel experience
The restaurant, bar and guest terrace keep the Asakusa experience inside the hotel. Breakfast runs roughly 6:30–10:00 a.m. and costs about ¥3,300 for hotel guests when it is not included.

A July 24, 2026 public Expedia listing showed a displayed total around US$179 for two adults on August 2. The final taxes, room category, breakfast and view depended on the checkout screen.

APA Hotel Sugamo Ekimae | Best balance for Itabashi
Choose this when Itabashi is the priority and the valuable feature is staying on the same subway line as the new Takashimadaira approach. JR Sugamo also keeps the following Tokyo day straightforward.

Toei Mita Line Sugamo Exit A4 is directly opposite the hotel and JR Sugamo is about two minutes away. The Mita Line keeps the Takashimadaira approach and the exhausted return on one route without an unnecessary transfer.
Hotel experience
The top-floor guest-only public bath has indoor and open-air areas and is normally open until about 2:00 a.m. Coin laundry and a Japanese-and-Western breakfast buffet add practical value after a long riverbank night; breakfast costs about ¥2,000 in advance or ¥2,200 at the door when not included.
