Hiroshima One-Day Itinerary: Peace Memorial Museum, Castle and Shukkeien

Hiroshima’s central sights are close enough for one day, but the Peace Memorial Museum should not be rushed to make room for everything else. Start there in the morning, walk through the park to the Genbaku Dome, then decide how much energy remains for the castle grounds and Shukkeien.

Suggested route

Peace Memorial Museum.
Peace Memorial Park and the Genbaku Dome.
Lunch around Hondori or Okonomimura.
Hiroshima Castle grounds and Ninomaru.
Shukkeien Garden, then return to Hiroshima Station.

Take a tram from Hiroshima Station to the peace-park area, then continue mostly on foot towards the station. Check the current tram fare and day-pass price before deciding whether an unlimited ticket is worthwhile.

Start with the Peace Memorial Museum

Visit the museum before the outdoor memorials. Reading time and emotional response vary, so allow around 90 minutes or more instead of planning the rest of the day around a strict exit time.

Advance admission is useful during busy periods. Check the museum’s current ticket and entry arrangements before travelling, especially around August memorial events and Japanese holidays.

Walk through Peace Memorial Park

From the museum, continue past the Cenotaph, Children’s Peace Monument and other memorials before reaching the Genbaku Dome. Give the park time rather than treating it as a shortcut between two buildings.

Lunch around Hondori

Hondori and the nearby entertainment streets have more lunch choices than the immediate park area. Okonomimura is convenient for a first Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki because several restaurants share one building, but a well-reviewed individual shop on your route is equally reasonable.

Hiroshima Castle grounds

The main tower is currently closed, so plan the visit around the exterior, moat, Ninomaru buildings and surrounding grounds rather than an interior climb. Around 30–45 minutes is enough for most visitors.

Finish at Shukkeien Garden

Shukkeien is a compact landscape garden built around a central pond. It is a calm final stop and can be shortened when the museum visit or lunch takes longer than expected. Check the current closing time before leaving it until late afternoon.

With only half a day

Keep the museum, park, Genbaku Dome and lunch. Remove Hiroshima Castle first, then Shukkeien if necessary. Trying to shorten every stop usually makes the whole route feel hurried.

Can you add Miyajima?

It is possible only with a much shorter city visit. With two days, use one day for Hiroshima and one for Miyajima. That gives both places enough time and avoids making the museum visit depend on a ferry schedule.
