A four-day Shikoku trip can connect Kochi Yosakoi and Tokushima Awa Odori without a car, but only if the festival nights—not the map—decide where you sleep. The cleanest three-night pattern is to enter through Takamatsu, stay two consecutive nights in Kochi, then move to Tokushima on August 12 for the final night.
Do not divide the trip into one night each in Takamatsu, Kochi and Tokushima simply to collect three cities. Takamatsu is the gateway for the airport, Okayama and Setouchi ferries; Kochi needs two nights because the main Yosakoi programme runs on August 10 and 11; Tokushima needs the last night because Awa Odori continues late and the journey back to Takamatsu is an unnecessary risk.
This route is designed for first-time festival visitors, rail travellers, families and anyone carrying a full-size suitcase. It protects complete evenings, keeps transfers in daylight and leaves enough energy to walk back to a nearby bed after the performances.

How the three bases differ

Continue to Kochi on day one whenever the arrival time allows.
Kochi: the centre of the itinerary. Yosakoi teams rotate through Otesuji, Obiyamachi, the central park area and other city venues. Two nights let you learn the street layout on the first evening and choose a different viewing style on the second without repacking between crowded days.
Tokushima: the correct final night. The rail journey from Kochi normally involves a change at Awa-Ikeda, so make it in daylight. A hotel beside JR Tokushima Station keeps luggage out of the dance district and makes the walk back after the late session more reliable than an onward train.
Choose the stay around your route and travel style
Day 1 — August 9: enter through Takamatsu and continue to Kochi. Attend the eve programme only when the arrival is comfortable; otherwise check in, eat early and learn the tram and walking route.
Day 2 — August 10: the first Yosakoi main day. Leave the suitcase at the same hotel and choose two or three nearby venues. Let teams come to you instead of chasing a minute-by-minute schedule through road controls and heavy crowds.
Day 3 — August 11: a second full Kochi night. After experiencing the street venues, use a more fixed viewing area or reserved seating for contrast. This is easier for children, older travellers and anyone struggling with the August heat.
Day 4 — August 12: check out in the morning, travel through Awa-Ikeda to Tokushima and leave bags at the station hotel before Awa Odori. Do not insert Iya Valley, Oboke or Naruto into this transfer day.
Couples can add a sea-view Takamatsu night before or after the core route. Families benefit most from two nights in one Kochi room and a station-connected final night. Travellers with large cases should forward them from Kochi to Tokushima or use same-day hotel storage.
After sleeping in Tokushima, highway buses make Osaka and Kobe practical onward destinations. For Okayama or the Setouchi islands, travel back through Takamatsu the following day rather than abandoning the final Awa Odori session early.

How to allocate one night, two nights or the full three
For the full four days and three nights, stay in Kochi for two nights and Tokushima for one. Use Takamatsu as the gateway unless you arrive too late to continue.
With only two nights, stay in Kochi on August 11, move in daylight on August 12 and sleep in Tokushima after Awa Odori. For one festival and one night, choose central Kochi for Yosakoi or the JR Tokushima Station area for Awa Odori. Add Takamatsu before or after the route rather than replacing a festival night.
